Southern Yellow Pine Logs (SYP)

Southern Yellow Pine or Southern Pine describes various species of Pine, such as Longleaf, Shortleaf and Loblolly.

Growing in the Southern States of the USA from Virginia to Texas.

 

SYP is grown in plantations and natural forests.

 

 

Some Facts

Appearance:

  • Heartwood: pale yellow-brown
  • Sapwood: wide and not always clearly distinguishable
  • Texture: fine but uneven
  • Grain: usually straight except for a central core of about 100mm in diameter
  • Growth Rings: prominent
  • Knots: very common

General:

  • easy to dry
  • prone to blue stain during warmer months
  • rapid drying rate
  • high in resin content
